During the Edo period, Japanese fans were absolute, must-have, household items. In addition to people using these fans to stay cool through the hot humid summers, Japanese fans were commonly used in kitchens to fan and control the heat of the fire ovens to create perfect meals. Playing such a large part in people’s daily lives, Japanese fans were often designed with popular visuals from the period as well as being used as advertising materials. While many of them perished during the journey to present day, there are still quite a few that have survived from the Edo period. Many of them were personalized with images of ukiyo-e drawn by the famous artists of the time such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi. Just imagine people cooling themselves with such fans. How “cool” is that ?
